In a study evaluating the iPad with OsiriX HD image viewing software, 10 consultant radiologists from the Imperial College Healthcare National Health Service Trust read 10 emergency CT studies of all body parts, first on the iPad and then on their standard CT workstation. Neuroimaging was included.
The researchers found a strong level of concordance, with a low rate of clinically significant error. The radiologists also believed the device's ergonomics were acceptable for this application, according to the study team.
Touchscreen tablets such as the iPad have the technical capabilities required for remote CT reporting on the move, said presenter Daniel Fascia.
"This could both improve access to expert radiology opinions and improve image-guided patient treatment outcomes," Fascia said. "It also offers the radiologist greater freedom of location without compromising service delivery."
