Image management firm Heart Imaging Technologies (HeartIT) and Johns Hopkins Medicine have received a $2.25 million grant from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) to include images in the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN).
HeartIT said it has proposed the use of its WebPax technology as a software-as-a-service (SaaS) PACS for smaller healthcare providers to allow them to share and access images via the NHIN, which is a federal initiative of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology.
WebPax allows delivery of PACS capability via an SaaS model through Web 2.0 technologies, and it enables any Web browser to function as a medical imaging workstation without having to install client software, according to HeartIT. It includes technology such as zoom/pan, movie controls, distance measurements, and regions of interest.
HeartIT is collaborating with Johns Hopkins Medicine and its member hospitals to develop a prototype of the technology and demonstrate its value and capabilities within NHIN, the company said.
