LifeImage offers patient access to medical images

Medical image sharing provider LifeImage said it is offering its physician and hospital customers a free service that gives their patients cloud-based access to imaging exams.

The service allows unlimited on-demand access to DICOM data in cloud-hosted accounts that patients can use to share exams with other physicians if they wish, LifeImage said.

Patients with acute and chronic conditions often see doctors at more than one facility, and this service allows them to provide rapid access to images for any healthcare provider, the company said.

Some 140 hospitals and 73,000 physicians nationwide who are using the system can now begin using it to engage patients in their healthcare, the company said. Institutions including the Mayo Clinic, Mount Sinai Hospital, and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) are already using the service, which will be showcased at next week's 2013 Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) annual meeting.
