IMV: Hospital cardiology moving beyond CPACS, CVIS

Cardiology departments in U.S. hospitals are moving beyond separate cardiovascular PACS (CPACS) and information systems (CVIS), according to a new market research report by IMV Medical Information Division.

Instead, they are considering the improved efficiency provided by integration with other capabilities such as radiology PACS, departmental IT systems, and the hospital's electronic medical record (EMR) system.

The report, titled "2014 Cardiology Information Continuum: Present Access and Future Integration Strategies for Cardiovascular Information Technology," is based on responses from 194 department administrators, including cardiovascular services administrators, IT and management information systems directors, CPACS managers, and radiology administrators in U.S. hospitals that have at least one cardiac cath lab installed.

IMV found that the top two cardiology department priorities are managing the integration of cardiovascular IT systems with EMR and aligning these systems with workflow practices.

Seventy-seven percent of U.S. hospitals surveyed said they had both CPACS and CVIS, while 17% said they had one system or another. Six percent reported no formal implementation of either a CPACS or CVIS.

Of the sites that have both, half said that their CPACS and CVIS are integrated, according to the report.
