The Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) has awarded its $10,000 Innovation Challenge prize to a team from Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU).
Announced during the general closing session at SIIM's annual meeting in Portland, OR, earlier this month, the prize was awarded to Dr. James Morrison for a project that addressed the inefficiencies of using standard keyboard and mouse interfaces. Morrison and colleagues used the Amazon Echo voice interaction platform to demonstrate the possibility of automating electronic health record data extraction, radiology reference mining, inventory queries, patient scheduling, and result reporting.
Other members of the OHSU team included Dr. Jonathan Steinberger, Dr. Steven Kassakian, and PhD candidate Eric Leung. Morrison will use the prize money to obtain additional hardware for development and testing, according to SIIM. The group will then deploy the system in an academic radiology environment and share their experience at the SIIM 2017 annual meeting in Pittsburgh.
