Academy issues call for support of imaging institute

Urging supporters of a U.S. biomedical imaging institute to contact their senators immediately, the Academy of Radiology Research has posted sample letters on the Internet that can be downloaded and redirected to members of Congress.

Douglas Maynard, president of the Academy of Radiology Research and president-elect of the Radiological Society of North America, wrote that because the current session of Congress will end in a week or two, the radiology community must act quickly to ensure the passage of S. 1110, a bill that would establish an Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Bioimaging at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a companion bill (H.R. 1795) on September 27, but the NIH has mounted an effort to stop the legislation before Congress adjourns, Maynard wrote. The academy has led lobbying efforts to create the institute. So far more than 13,000 people have contacted the academy directly to express their support, and nearly 2,400 names from a recent AuntMinnie.com online petition have also been given to the organization.

The letters can be downloaded at http://hometown.aol.com/acadrad/myhomepage/profile.html, edited in a word processing or e-mail program, and redirected to individual senators. E-mail addresses for members of Congress can be found at http://www.congress.org.
