As PACS buyers gravitate towards enterprise-wide image management systems, systems integrators believe their flexibility in designing digital image management networks offers considerable value to prospective customers. One such company is Medical Technology Services, an Aurora, OH-based firm making its exhibit hall debut at this week's Symposium for Computer Applications in Radiology.
MTS is a distributor for Dutch PACS vendor Rogan Medical Systems in the Americas, and also markets a variety of other PACS and digital x-ray technology. The firm is a value-added reseller (VAR) for Eastman Kodak Health Imaging (computed radiography and laser printers), Nucletron (ThoraScan digital chest system), Canon Medical Systems (digital radiography), and CMT Medical Technologies (secondary capture for digital radiography and fluoroscopy).
As a systems integrator, MTS can avoid any legacy issues of its own, and offer a flexible digital image management network, said Gary Kaufmann, a former Picker International executive who is MTS' vice president of marketing and business development. Among other partnerships, MTS also provides Voxar's 3-D software, and has VAR relationships with Dot Hill Systems for RAID equipment and Rorke Data for JVC and Pioneer jukeboxes.
In addition to its PACS and digital conversion activities, which are run out of its network services division, MTS also has two other business units: modality services and United Technical Support Services (UTSS). Modality services provide digital modality products and services, while UTSS offers installation and preventative maintenance for network and imaging systems. MTS bought UTSS, a former independent company, three years ago, Kaufmann said.
"In addition to providing network design, we're also capable of servicing the equipment," Kaufmann said. "Customers can come to us for a true full solution."
If a customer wishes, MTS can also provide its services via an application service provider (ASP) model, or through a leasing arrangement, thanks to relationships with several banks, including Ebank.
The firm currently has two PACS customers up and running in the U.S., and hopes to have a dozen installations by the end of this year. In addition, MTS has been selected as a preferred provider by group purchasing organization Managed Health Care Associates (MHA) of Florham Park, NJ.
