Kodak's medical sales climb in Q1

Eastman Kodak Health Imaging reported first-quarter sales of $631 million, up 15% compared with the $549 million turned in during the first quarter of 2003. For the period (end-March 31), the Rochester, NY-based vendor had earnings from operations of $93 million on a GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles) and operational basis, compared with $109 million a year ago.

In quarterly highlights, Kodak noted a 24% increase in sales of digital products and services. The increase was primarily attributable to its October acquisition of PracticeWorks and higher sales volumes of digital capture equipment, digital media, and services, Kodak said.

In the U.S., Kodak's healthcare unit had net sales of $258 million, up 8% compared with the $238 million recorded in the first quarter of 2003. Net sales outside of the U.S. reached $373 million, up 20% (9% excluding favorable exchange impact) from the $311 million reported last year.
