Dear Business & Industry Insider,
In this month's Business & Industry Insider, we bring you the story of an Italian start-up company that's developed an intriguing new design for an open MRI magnet.
The MR-Open scanner from Paramed Medical Systems is unique for two reasons. First, it features a novel U-shaped "open-sky" configuration in which magnet slabs are positioned to the left and right of the patient bed rather than above and below, a design the company believes will reduce claustrophobia.
Second, MR-Open uses a new superconducting magnet material, called magnesium diboride, in place of the niobium titanium wire found on most commercial MRI magnets. The new material means that MR-Open is a cryogen-free system that does not require refrigeration gas or fluids, which should reduce operating costs.

Also, today's news that Eastman Kodak of Rochester, NY, is selling its health division to an investment group from Canada is rocking the medical imaging world. As staff writer Erik L. Ridley reports in his article, this is actually the second investment that the Canadian firm has made in radiology. Get the details about the deal by clicking here.
