Dear AuntMinnie Member,
The medical imaging industry is full of interesting twists. One of the more intriguing turns of late is happening in Denver, where a group of imaging veterans are working to revive the legacy of Fischer Imaging, a radiography and mammography vendor that filed for Chapter 11 in 2006 and was assumed to be defunct.
Now called Fischer Medical Technologies, the reconstituted company is led by longtime Fischer CEO Morgan Nields, as well as Kinney Johnson, who helped Nields form the modern version of Fischer in 1973 with a leveraged buyout. Their goal is to create a new incarnation of Fischer that competes in the market for digital radiography systems.
Before you write them off as dreamers tilting at windmills in a market dominated by huge vendors, take a look at this issue's Insider Exclusive, which details their strategy for survival. Nields and colleagues have identified a market niche that they believe will develop thanks to the convergence of two new technologies -- namely flat-panel digital detectors and conebeam CT.
