GE Healthcare today expanded its presence in two product areas with acquisitions in the protein science and drug discovery research market and in IT.
The Chalfont St. Giles, U.K., company has acquired MicroCal, a provider of instruments for the study of molecular interactions in pharmaceutical, biomedical, and life science research.
Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. MicroCal's majority owner is private equity firm Riverside Partners, which invested in the company in 1999.
MicroCal develops and manufactures microcalorimeters that provide detailed information on the structure, function, and binding properties of biomolecules such as proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, and antibodies.
Its proprietary technology, which is seen as complementary to GE's Biacore platform, is designed to provide detailed information across several stages of drug discovery to reduce the potential for late-stage drug candidate failures. MicroCal's technology is used in more than 1,000 laboratories worldwide.
GE Healthcare plans to develop the MicroCal facility in Northampton, MA, into a center of excellence for microcalorimetry.
GE also has purchased Agility Healthcare Solutions of Glen Allen, VA. Agility, which will become part of GE Healthcare's global Diagnostic Imaging Services business, specializes in hospital workflow and patient care management products.
Its technology platform provides enterprise visibility and management of patient flow, assets, beds and rooms, staff, emergency department activities, surgical services processes, and other hospital resources and workflow in an integrated, modular application.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
