German industrial conglomerate Siemens AG announced mixed results for its Siemens Healthcare business in its fiscal 2009 third quarter (end-June 30).
Healthcare revenue rose to 2.865 billion euros ($4.03 billion) during the period, compared with 2.677 billion euros ($3.77 billion) in 2008, representing growth of 7% on an actual basis and 2% after currency adjustments. Sales growth came out of Australia and Asia, with the exception of Japan, the company said; market conditions in the U.S. and Japan remain difficult.
The company reported a 16% profit downturn, posting a profit of 270 million euros ($380 million) compared with a profit of 320 million euros ($450 million) in 2008. The company attributed the dip to a 128 million euros ($180 million) charge associated with particle therapy contracts in its Workflow and Solutions division.
Among healthcare divisions, profits at the Imaging and IT unit rose 39% from the same period last year to 277 million euros ($389 million), thanks to higher revenue and cost-reduction measures, Siemens said. Revenue rose 8% to 1.688 billion euros ($2.4 billion).
