Tomophase nets OCT patent

Tomophase has received a patent for technology used to combine CT and optical coherence tomography (OCT) with technology for therapeutic treatment utilizing electromagnetic radiation, such as laser, radiofrequency, or microwave.

The integrated workstation combines CT to detect and locate small early-stage solitary pulmonary nodules with the ability of OCT to provide real-time, high-resolution images of those nodules for subsequent therapeutic treatment.

According to the company, the patent "has bearing" on imaging companies such as GE Healthcare, Siemens Healthcare, Boston Scientific, Hitachi, and Karl Storz.

Tomophase developed the OCT Imaging System (OCTIS) for subsurface tissue imaging of airways and lungs, followed by diagnostic and therapeutic applications.

OCTIS received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in December 2010. The company is proceeding with the product's launch.
