Forensic imaging is a globally growing subspecialty of radiology and forensic medicine. To promote best practices in forensic radiology and imaging through communication and cooperation, an international group of forensic pathologists, radiologists, radiographers, and surveying engineers established the International Society of Forensic Radiology and Imaging (ISFRI) on November 14 in Zurich.
The society aims to strengthen and develop the field of forensic radiology and imaging worldwide. This includes promoting best practice and developing international quality standards and guidelines in this field of imaging. The society is open to all professionals involved in forensic radiology and imaging.
Dr. Michael Thali, chairman and a professor at the Institute of Forensic Medicine at the University of Zurich, and Mark Viner, a fellow at the Forensic Institute of Cranfield University in the U.K. and founding member and inaugural chair of the International Association of Forensic Radiographers, are prominent board members of the new society.
The first ISFRI Congress will be held in Zurich in May 2012, and all participants of this congress will receive ISFRI membership status and be regarded as founding members.
The society will also publish the Journal of Forensic Radiology and Imaging, a peer-reviewed journal that focuses on forensic radiology and imaging and aims to develop best practices by presenting high-quality evidence-based reviews and original research articles. The first issue is scheduled for publication in mid-2012.
