NCRP issues nuclear terror report

The U.S. National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) has released a new report on the management of terrorist events involving radioactive materials.

The report offers a consensus of existing and proposed regulations from U.S. agencies and scientific bodies. It is intended for use as a guide for various radiation-related events, according to NCRP president Charles Meinhold.

"This report will be ... helpful in understanding what might happen if some amount of radiation is released deliberately," he said in a statement. "Our problems ... are to assess the actual extent of the release and to implement immediate and appropriate control activities."

NCRP is a nonprofit corporation chartered by Congress in 1964 to provide a wide range of information about radiation protection and measurement. The report is available for $50, less for multiple copies, at the organization's Web site.
