ACADRAD calls for more imaging institute funds

The Academy of Radiology Research said yesterday that the amount of money budgeted to create a National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) is inadequate. The Washington, DC, group, which last year led the successful campaign to create the institute, is urging a letter-writing campaign to garner more funding.

The academy believes that the $40 million in new funds requested for the NIBIB in 2002 falls short of what's needed. The organization is calling on the radiology community to write to members of the U.S. House of Representatives appropriations subcommittee to request a minimum of at least $300 million in funding for the fiscal year.

The group is asking U.S. radiologists and their supporters to write to their individual House labor, HHS and education appropriations subcommittee members and Senate appropriations committee members using the letter it has posted at www.acadrad.org/apprletter.htm.

The next six weeks will be crucial in determining whether NIBIB gets off to a strong start, according to academy president Dr. Douglas Maynard. The letter on the academy's Web site contains detailed information about the funding request.
