Radiologists, RTs brought home higher earnings in 2022

Radiologists and radiologic technologists (RTs) both received higher salaries in 2022, according to AuntMinnie.com's 2023 SalaryScan survey.

Radiologists responding to our annual compensation and benefits survey reported an average base salary of $439,944 in 2022, up from $432,267 in 2021. Among those who indicated their modality specializations, CT specialists had the highest average base salary of $400,000, while nuclear medicine/PET specialists were at the bottom of the list with an average base salary of $337,000.

On a regional basis, the West North Central region was the most lucrative for radiologists, offering an average base salary of $540,000. The West South Central region was next in line with an average base salary of $449,000 followed by the South Atlantic region with an average base salary of $431,000. The Mountain region was the lowest in this year's rankings with an average base salary of $350,000.

Meanwhile, the high demand for RTs has apparently driven increases in salaries. In 2022, RTs had an average base salary of $85,238, up from $80,209. Continuing a recent trend, technologists who specialized were mostly able to earn higher salaries.

Sonographers topped the list at an average base salary of $93,497, followed closely by interventional technologists at $92,278 and nuclear medicine/PET technologists at $91,988. Mammography technologists again pulled up the rear with an annual base salary of $80,533.

Interestingly, salaries on a regional basis differed significantly between radiologists and RTs. The Pacific region -- fourth in radiologist salaries -- topped this year's technologist take-home pay with an average base salary of $111,000. Ranked at the bottom for radiologists, the Mountain region was second highest for technologists, providing an average base salary of $88,000. The East South Central region came in last with an average base salary of $59,000.
