The Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) has come out against a proposal to create a new reporting framework for interventional radiology as part of the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) Value Pathways (MVP).
SIR said only three of the 11 quality measures are broadly applicable across the interventional radiology (IR) specialty. The rest primarily apply to IRs who subspecialize in areas such as stroke, dialysis access, venous services, and women’s health.
SIR believes the measure set is too narrow, making it difficult for many interventional radiologists to participate meaningfully without undue burden. The society said it expressed its concerns during the public comment period in January 2025.
Included in the 2026 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) proposed rule, the IR MVP proposed for performance year 2026 is meant to streamline quality reporting by focusing on clinically relevant measures for IRs.
"SIR remains concerned that the MVP does not adequately reflect the diversity and highly subspecialized nature of IR," the society said July 17.
