In line with its announcement earlier this month, the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has decided not to follow through in 2007 with a previously planned 50% reduction in payments for some imaging procedures.
The announcement came in the August 22 issue of the Federal Register.
CMS had proposed to reduce payments by 50% over two years -- 25% in 2006 and 25% in 2007 -- for the technical component for some selected imaging procedures when they are performed on contiguous body area. The reductions do not apply to the professional component of the reimbursements.
In the formal decision released on August 22, CMS stated that it "would be prudent to maintain the multiple imaging payment reduction at its current 25% level while we continue to examine the appropriate payment levels. Therefore, we are proposing to continue the multiple imaging payment reduction for 2007 at the 25% level."
