Dear Imaging Center Insider,
Radiology practice administrators and managers, and particularly the radiologists they work with, are intelligent, motivated, and goal-oriented people. These characteristics are outstanding attributes for achieving individual success; however, these same qualities can be a detriment when these personalities are required to create and accept governance from their peers.
According to Will Latham, a presenter at a Radiology Business Management Association (RBMA) meeting in San Francisco this month, governing a practice doesn't involve making people over, but it does require some understanding of how personalities influence the way the practice runs.
These personalities, Latham said, play into a group dynamic that, in turn, influences how the practice is governed. There are four stages in the governance process, beginning with forming and ending with performing. Getting beyond the first stage in the practice governance process is tricky and requires a savvy administrator with a strong skill set in emotional intelligence.
