The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued a proposed rule to revise payment rates and policies under its Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) for 2008. As a result of the proposed changes, the fee schedule would receive a 9.9% cut in benefits, according to the proposal.
The proposed rule also includes provisions related to "per-click" payments in space equipment and leases, new enrollment standards and rules on leasing arrangements for independent diagnostic testing facilities (IDTF), and payment policies for interpretation services provided by outside suppliers.
CMS will accept comments on the proposed rule until August 31, with a final rule to be published later in the fall. The final rule will be effective for services on or after January 1, 2008, according to CMS.
