The American College of Radiology (ACR) and the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI) have withdrawn from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC).
The Reston, VA-based organizations say the decision is due to the inability to reach an agreement with the NAPBC over the "incorporation of the ACR's long-established standards, practice guidelines, and accreditation programs related to breast imaging and image-guided interventions, despite the fact that these programs do not exclude participation by practitioners of specialties other than radiology."
The ACR is planning to introduce a voluntary Breast Imaging Centers of Excellence (BICOE) initiative in which facilities that meet certain criteria will receive the designation. The ACR intends to have more details in the fall.
