Are you a profit center? And, PET/CT for osteosarcoma

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

Are you managing your radiology department, imaging center, or radiology group as effectively as you should be? Are you eking out every last dime of profit and squeezing out every nickel of waste?

In these tough economic times, these are questions that all radiology business managers should be asking themselves. To help you with the answers, this week we're unveiling the Profit Center, a new series in our Imaging Center Digital Community on business management issues.

We kick off the Profit Center with a new article by healthcare business and legal affairs expert Mark Weiss. Mr. Weiss presents the stories of two hypothetical radiology groups, one of which is able to successfully negotiate a new contract with its hospital partner, while the other one ... well, not so much.

PET/CT for osteosarcoma

In other news, we're featuring a new article in our Molecular Imaging Digital Community by staff writer Wayne Forrest on the use of PET/CT for osteosarcoma.

In the study, researchers from M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston used PET/CT to predict several aspects of osteosarcoma patient outcomes, including progression-free survival, overall survival, and tumor necrosis.

The paper is potentially novel because the authors used a new imaging parameter -- total lesion glycolysis -- in addition to standardized uptake values to assess PET/CT's effectiveness in osteosarcoma patients. Find out how it worked by clicking here, or visit the community at molecular.auntminnie.com.
