Canadian rad fails competency test

The Canadian radiologist at the center of a review of 70,000 imaging studies he interpreted has failed a written competency examination, according to Canadian news outlets.

Dr. Darius Tsatsi failed a review administered by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan and does not have the skills or knowledge to practice radiology, according to an article by CBC News.

The college has been examining Tsatsi's competency as part of its review of 70,000 imaging studies he interpreted over four years at Yorkton Regional Health Centre in the Sunrise Health Region in Saskatchewan, Canada. The studies are being reinterpreted as part of the review.

The college has assessed Tsatsi's competency several times, and he underwent three months of remedial training in 2008. In the most recent episode, Tsatsi's privileges were suspended in May pending the outcome of the review.

CBC News reported that the college's competency committee gave him a written exam and concluded that he "lacked skill and knowledge to practice as a radiologist." They also recommended that he spend a year retraining before returning to practice radiology.

The college is going to consider Tsatsi's fate on November 20, with options including revoking his license to practice medicine, continuing his suspension, or allowing him to continue practicing with conditions, according to CBC News.
