Mad River radiation case settled; new Imaging Leaders community

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

The tragic case of a 2-year-old Northern California boy who received a massive overdose of radiation during a CT exam has been settled.

The parents of Jacoby Roth settled the case with Mad River Community Hospital of Arcata, where the scans occurred. While details of the settlement haven't been disclosed, contributing writer Donna Domino provides an update for our Pediatric Imaging Digital Community.

The Roth case is one of several radiation overdose incidents in the past two years that have prompted federal authorities to take a closer look at regulating medical radiation. Find out the latest by clicking here.

In related news, it's accepted wisdom that imaging facilities should change their CT scanner settings when imaging children instead of adults. But should these settings be based on the age of the children? There's a better way, say researchers from Children's Hospital Boston in an article you can read by clicking here.

Meanwhile, California state lawmakers were scheduled to hear a bill this week that would require imaging facilities to record the dose of any procedure that delivers ionizing radiation.

New Imaging Leaders community

In other news, we're pleased to announce a new look for our Imaging Leaders Digital Community (formerly known as the Imaging Center Digital Community).

The new community will continue to provide the latest news and information on practice management and economics for both hospital radiology departments and outpatient imaging centers. You'll also get insight into current topics in practice economics, thanks to our new Leaders in Imaging series.

Each installment in the series will feature the wisdom and observations of major figures in radiology, such as Dr. Leonard Berlin of NorthShore University HealthSystem of Skokie, IL, our first interview subject. Dr. Berlin spoke with associate editor Kate Madden Yee about the current environment for malpractice litigation, tort reform, and the rise of national radiology groups. Read all about it by clicking here.

Also visit the community to learn about the recent settlement of a U.S. Department of Justice case against two Ohio healthcare providers that were accused of paying doctors to refer heart patients for procedures including echocardiograms and stress tests. That article is available by clicking here.
