Dear Imaging Leaders Insider,

Thus far, the month of October has been dominated by congressional drama, with both sides wrangling over the U.S. debt ceiling and President Obama's healthcare reform bill, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010.

Arguments aside, it looks like the legislation is here to stay, and both private practice radiologists and those in academic institutions will be affected.

What changes will impact academic radiologists? Dr. Pablo Ros of Case Western Reserve University and colleagues have written to their academic peers, outlining the effects of ACA and suggesting ways that university-based radiologists should approach its ongoing implementation. We're highlighting their advice in this newsletter's Insider Exclusive, which you can access before our regular members.

In another article in the Imaging Leaders Digital Community, cardiac sonographer Doug Wuebben is sounding the call for his fellows to go the extra mile for patients. For his thoughts on the matter, click here.

Radiologists are criticized for supposedly spending their workdays alone in dark reading rooms. But is reading images really how they spend the bulk of their time? What researchers from the University of British Columbia found regarding radiologists' work patterns may surprise you. Check out our coverage of the study.

And for those moving into the job market, a research group led by Dr. Edward Bluth from the Ochsner Clinic Foundation concluded there are positions for residents finishing their training -- but they may not be dream jobs. Check out what Dr. Bluth's team had to say about the market and how it might affect radiology resident training.

Does focusing on geographic variation in imaging use and costs really rein in Medicare spending? Researchers from NYU Langone Medical Center think not. Take a look at our story about their study.

Finally, radiologic technologists have their own needs and perceptions toward PACS that need to be taken into account for digital image management to be successful. Find out what technologists want from PACS by clicking here.
