The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) said it will put a two-week hold on claims for medical services submitted in 2015 under the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS).
The hold is being placed to give CMS time to correct technical errors found after the 2015 MPFS was published in November, and to process claims correctly. Medicare administrative contractors will hold claims containing services paid under the 2015 MPFS for the first 14 calendar days of January 2015.
CMS believes the hold should minimally affect the cash flow of healthcare providers, because under current law, "clean" electronic claims are not paid sooner than 14 calendar days after the date they are received.
Claims for medical services rendered on or before December 31, 2014, will not be affected by the hold, the agency said.
