Senate confirms new FDA commissioner

The U.S. Senate has confirmed Dr. Scott Gottlieb as the new commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The Senate voted 57 to 42 to confirm Gottlieb, a physician who had served at the FDA as deputy commissioner for medical and scientific affairs from 2005 to 2007. He was also director of medical policy development in 2004 and senior adviser to the commissioner for medical technology from 2003 to 2004.

More recently, Gottlieb was appointed in 2013 as a member of the Federal Health IT Policy Committee.
