National medical group Mednax is reporting a decline in its business due to the continued spread and ramifications of COVID-19.

In particular, orders within its Radiology Solutions segment have declined by a "meaningful amount from historically normal levels," the company reported, with "much of this reduction focused in nonurgent studies." In response, Mednax Radiology Solutions physicians are augmenting remote capabilities for affiliated radiologists and serving as third-party consultants for chest imaging for COVID-19 diagnostic purposes.

The company's American anesthesiology medical group also has experienced a "significant decline" in the number of elective surgeries due to the closing of operating suites or facilities following federal advisories to cancel nonurgent procedures and the prohibition of such procedures by several states.

Mednax's office-based practices, which specialize in maternal-fetal medicine, pediatric cardiology, and numerous pediatric subspecialties, also have experienced a significant increase in canceled appointments.

The company expects the slowdown to be temporary, with patients and clients postponing nonessential healthcare to a later date, rather than a permanent reduction in demand for services.
