All available diagnostic and interventional radiology residency positions filled on March 17, Match Day 2023, according to the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).

Radiology was one of 11 specialties that saw increases in the number of positions filled by U.S. medical school seniors of more than 10% and ten positions in the last five years (2019 to 2023), the NRMP said. The specialty was also on the list of those with 30 residency positions or more, all of which filled.

This year's match was the largest in the program's history, with 42,952 applicants submitting rank order lists and 40,375 residency positions. Of these applicants, 34,822 matched to a first-year residency position, for a rate of 81.1%. Available residency positions increased by 1,170, up 14.8% over the last five years, the NRMP said.

However, there was also a decrease in the number of medical student seniors who submitted a rank order list compared with last year, at 19,748 versus 19,902. The NRMP reported a total 6,270 total certified programs -- an increase of 183 programs from last year, and out of these, 5,431 filled for a rate of 86.6%.

The NRMP also reported the following:

  • U.S. medical student seniors had a match rate of 93.7%.
  • U.S. Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) seniors had a 91.6% match rate.
  • U.S. citizen international medical school graduates had a match rate of 67.6%.
  • Non-U.S. citizen international medical school graduates had a match rate of 59.4%.

"The 2023 Main Residency Match proved once again to be a highly successful Match with outstanding results for participants," NRMP President and CEO Donna Lamb said in a statement. "For the past 70 years, the NRMP has been proud to play a part in helping physicians transition into residency training and begin careers serving their patients and community."
