The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) federal fiscal year (FY) 2025 Hospital Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) final rule includes several radiology-relevant topics, according to a detailed summary from the American College of Radiology (ACR).
The CMS finalized a 2.9% update from FY 2024 and estimated this will translate to an increase of $3.2 billion in operating and capital payments to IPPS hospitals, ACR said in its report. Additional payments for inpatient cases involving new medical technologies will increase by approximately $300 million in FY 2025, driven by the approval of several new technology add-on payments, ACR noted.
Under electronic clinical quality measures (eCQMs), ACR said the Excessive Radiation Dose or Inadequate Image Quality for Diagnostic CT in Adults eCQM will become available at the start of the 2025 reporting year. The measure is directly attributable to radiology departments and facilities included in the IQR program, according to the ACR. The CMS includes it as an option for one of the three measures hospitals and facilities must choose to submit.
The ACR said it will continue communicating with CMS and allied organizations to prepare participating hospitals and facilities for the implementation of the eCQM measure. It is notable that CMS will begin requiring hospitals to submit eCQM data for all measures beginning in 2028, the ACR said.
Changes take effect October 1. Read the full report here.
