Advocacy group offers advice for treating Muslim patients

A 20-page guide to treating Muslim patients can be obtained through The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). The Washington, DC-based advocacy group recently released "A Health Care Provider’s Guide to Islamic Religious Practices."

Information in the booklet that will be of particular interest to imaging professionals includes the preferred setting for conducting mammograms with female staff, as well as fasting requirements observed by Muslims during the season of Ramadan, which may affect imaging protocols.

The guides are $3 each and can be obtained through the CAIR Web site or by writing to the group at: CAIR, 453 New Jersey Ave. SE, Washington, DC 20003.

There are nearly six million Muslims living in the U.S., according to the organization.
