The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) has chosen New Jersey radiologist Dr. Gregory Nicola to be a member of its Choosing Wisely Champions team.
Nicola is vice president of the Hackensack Radiology Group and chair of the American College of Radiology's (ACR) committee on the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA), according to the ACR.
The American Board of Internal Medicine Foundation's Champions program recognizes physicians who make significant contributions to reducing overuse and waste in medicine, such as by designing or implementing an intervention, an educational initiative, or society recommendations.
Nicola's designation hinged primarily on his work at Hackensack University Medical and Trauma Center in Hackensack, NJ, where he designed and enacted various institutional paradigms that followed Choosing Wisely recommendations, according to the ACR. One such program included a clinical protocol for evaluating nontraumatic back pain in the emergency department using evidence-based recommendations regarding imaging and medication.
