Dr. Cheri Canon of the University of Alabama at Birmingham has been named president of the Society of Chairs of Academic Radiology Departments (SCARD). Canon is the second woman to hold the position, according to the university.
A nonprofit organization, SCARD promotes research and clinical care, as well as medical education, development of educational methods, and interaction among chairpersons of radiology departments. Canon joined SCARD over a decade ago, after being named interim chair of the university's radiology department, before being appointed permanent chair.
Canon will serve in the role for two years, chair the SCARD board, and oversee its strategic and fiscal responsibilities. In taking over the position, she noted the importance of having women in leadership positions, with less than 20% of radiology departments chaired by women and only 25% of practicing residents being female.
