The number of students enrolled in radiography educational programs increased slightly in 2017, but there were declines in nuclear medicine technology and radiation therapy programs, according to a survey conducted by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT).
The survey was emailed to 954 program directors in December 2017; of these, 333 participated, for a response rate of 34.9%. Results included the following:
- An estimated 15,769 students were enrolled in radiography programs in 2017, averaging 21.7 students per program, up from 21.1 in 2016.
- Radiation therapy programs had an average of 10.5 students per program in 2017, down from 10.8 in 2016.
- Nuclear medicine technology programs had an average of 10.9 students per program in 2017, down from 11.4 in 2016.
The ASRT said it has conducted the survey every year since 2001.
