Although falling just short of the 100% rate achieved in the last two years, nearly all available resident positions for diagnostic and interventional radiology were filled on Match Day 2024 on March 15.
In announcing the results of the 2024 Main Residency Match, the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) noted that interventional radiology-integrated had the fifth-highest percentage (91.4%) among positions filled with U.S. MD and DO seniors.

Overall, 44,853 applications submitted rank order lists in the 2024 Main Residency Match, with 41,503 certified PY-1 and PGY-2 positions available in 6,395 residency training programs. That’s up from 42,952 applicants and 40,375 residency positions in 2023.
Furthermore, a record-high number of 50,413 applicants registered in the 2024 Main Residency Match, up 4.7% from the 48,156 applicants registered in last year’s match. The NRMP attributed the increase largely due to higher number of non-U.S. citizen international medical graduates as well as osteopathic (DO) seniors.
In a statement, NRMP President and CEO Donna Lamb congratulated all future physicians and training programs on the results of the 2024 Main Residency Match.
"We are especially proud of applicants this year, many of whom began medical school the fall before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and had to quickly adapt to and thrive in a radically changed academic and training landscape,” she said. “Their experiences and success speak to a remarkable resilience and dedication they will carry with them into practice."
