The Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed) is urging the U.S. House of Representatives to pass legislation reauthorizing the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs following Senate approval.
Authorization for both programs lapsed on September 30, 2025. The programs provide competitive grants across 11 U.S. federal agencies -- including the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the Department of Defense -- to help fund early-stage research and development for small medtech businesses and startups, according to the organization.
In a survey of its Accel division members, which represent emerging and small businesses among AdvaMed's more than 600 member companies, 89% reported applying for SBIR/STTR grants and 31% successfully secured funding, the association said.
