In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, a hospital on Mississippi's Gulf Coast sent out an urgent call for radiologic technologists to volunteer to help the facility's overworked staff. The hospital's request was met by some 300 offers to volunteer from AuntMinnie members who read about their plight -- one from as far away as Portugal.
AuntMinnie wants to channel this volunteer spirit by setting up a new resource to match RT volunteers with Gulf Coast hospitals that need them. The need is profound -- the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has listed RTs as among the 38 types of healthcare professions that are urgently needed in the disaster zone.

If you're thinking about volunteering, please also keep in mind that conditions in the Gulf Coast region are still pretty rough. The HHS advisory specifies that volunteers should be in good physical shape and prepared for field conditions, such as sleeping in tents and on bed rolls.
