A law passed in 2009 to regulate licensure of radiologic technologists in Washington went into effect March 1, according to the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT).
The law requires registered radiologic technologists to hold a license to perform radiography imaging services. Those not registered must pass Wisconsin's limited scope of practice in radiography examination to receive their limited x-ray machine operator permit. The law also prohibits using diagnostic x-ray equipment on humans for diagnostic purposes without a prescription or order by a physician, dentist, podiatrist, chiropractor, advanced practice nurse prescriber, or physician assistant, the ASRT said.
As part of the law, Wisconsin created a seven-member radiography examining board that has regulatory authority to promulgate rules to establish licensure standards for radiography, according to the ASRT.
