Talk about versatile. A Minnesota radiologic technologist leaving the hospital after her shift helped deliver a baby outside a Mayo Clinic hospital in Rochester.
Deborah Vinje had just finished an eight-hour shift at Mayo Clinic Hospital, Methodist Campus, and was leaving the facility on a cold night on January 19 when she encountered a pregnant woman lying on the sidewalk with a baby crowning, according to an article on PostBulletin.com.
The woman, Kelly Schultz, had been rushing to the hospital with her husband Cory, who had pulled their van into the hospital's west entrance. Cory had gone into the hospital to retrieve a wheelchair, but Kelly realized the baby was crowning and she had to lie down.
Vinje saw Kelly Schultz lying on the sidewalk and came to her aid -- just as the baby began emerging. Three pushes later, Schultz had a newborn baby girl, Kannon Lee Schultz. A Methodist medical team arrived shortly thereafter and escorted both parents and baby into the hospital, as Vinje disappeared into the night.
After a short search identified Vinje as the good Samaritan, the four were reunited. Vinje was listed on the birth certificate as the delivering physician, according to the article.
