The American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) awarded the 2018 ASRT Award for Advocacy to the Pennsylvania Society of Radiologic Technologists and to the chair of the Texas Society of Radiologic Technologists.
Established in 2003, the award recognizes one affiliate society and one individual for outstanding public policy reform efforts performed in service of the radiologic technology community. ASRT members submit nominations from which the recipients are chosen.
In 2017, the Pennsylvania Society of Radiologic Technologists, along with the Philadelphia Society of Radiologic Technologists, worked with Rep. Bryan Cutler, a former radiologic technologist and current Pennsylvania state legislator, to introduce a legislative bill that would establish licensure requirements for personnel in the state who perform medical imaging and radiation therapy procedures.
Also recognized was Brian Rich, board chair of the Texas Society of Radiologic Technologists. Rich has supported consistent education and certification standards for the state's medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals, according to the ASRT. Through frequent trips from his home in Houston to the capitol in Austin, he monitors legislative activities and attends meetings of the Texas Medical Board, the agency that licenses radiologic technologists in the state.
The awards will be presented in June at the 2018 ASRT Annual Governance and House of Delegates Meeting in Las Vegas.
