The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) has joined forces with the Coalition for Health Information Policy (CHIP) to promote adoption of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) privacy regulations.
The Chicago-based HIMSS weighed in with its 11,000-member base in support of a March 30 letter sent by CHIP to Tommy Thompson, secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The letter urged Thompson to adopt the HIPAA privacy standards and implementation specifications on April 14, 2001.
The privacy rules have come under fire from a coalition of industry groups who believe that implementing them would be unnecessarily expensive and cumbersome.
