Expansion plans already underway for UKRC 2002

The success of the inaugural United Kingdom Radiological Congress (UKRC) has encouraged its organizers to expand the meeting's scope for 2002, including a possible change of venue.

Attendance for the London-based meeting numbered about 3,100, according to UKRC organizers. While that was 1,900 short of the projected goal of 5,000, the conference -- sponsored by several U.K.-based imaging organizations -- attracted a greater attendance than any previous meetings held separately since 1997, according to Dr. Peter Griffiths, 2002 UKRC president.

The UKRC was jointly hosted by the Royal College of Radiologists, the British Institute of Radiology, the Society and College of Radiographers, and the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine.

Next year’s congress will have a greater emphasis on oncology, digital imaging, and electronic patient records, Griffiths said. Legislative issues also will be on the agenda for the first time at next year’s meeting.

Discussions are underway regarding a possible venue change in 2002, Griffiths said, although he declined to elaborate on why the change might take place or where the conference might be held.

Organizers received positive feedback from delegates, praising the broad scientific program and the spacious, well-planned exhibit hall, said Sarah Nicholls, UKRC staff.
