The staff shortage of radiologic technologists may finally be relenting: The number of candidates taking the ARRT exams has increased for the first time in six years, according to the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. A total of 8,287 first-time candidates sat for the ARRT primary exam in 2001, an increase of 6.4% compared to 2000.
Broken down by specialty, there was a 45% increase in the number of students who took the radiation therapy exam; 12% growth in nuclear medicine; and a 4% increase in radiography.
This is the first increase since exam volume peaked in 1994.
