Penn wins $1 million grant

The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine has received a $1 million grant to set up an integrated graduate training program in clinical imaging and information sciences.

Penn received the grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, which is partnering with the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and BioEngineering (NIBIB) in an effort to set up interdisciplinary graduate education programs designed to produce scientists with the knowledge and skills to conduct research at the interface of biomedical, clinical, physical, engineering, and computational sciences.

The Penn grant was one of 10 such awards, and the university's radiology department will provide additional funds to hire two new faculty members to support the program. By the end of the three-year development period, 10 new Ph.D. students will be enrolled in the program, according to the university.
