ER doc makes sweet music with the medulla oblongata

In an effort to jazz up such flat topics as patient management and decontamination, an emergency room physician has released an original CD that combines music and medical information.

The 11-song "Brain Warm-Ups" CD uses a variety of musical styles -- rock, rap, and comic opera -- to cover common medical techniques and procedures. Song titles include "Code Blue," "Difficult Airway," and "The Violent Patient," which outlines how to handle a patient who is "talking smack."

The CD is the brainchild of Dr. Ted Willmore, medical director of the emergency department at St. Mary's Health Center in Jefferson City, MO. He holds degrees in music composition and medicine, the latter from Washington University in St. Louis. Willmore wrote the music, lyrics, and orchestration for the CD, and also sings several of the songs.

The CD can be bought through the Brain Warm-Ups Web site, which also offers clips of the songs. On the site, Willmore advises that "if you are a poor medical student, fellow, or resident, employ the time-honored Medieval tradition of public shaming to get your staff to buy you a copy! That way, we can keep churning out the beats. Yo."
