MRI from A to Z: A Definitive Guide for Medical Professionals by Gary P. Liney
Cambridge University Press, New York City, 2005, $34.99
Billed as a reference for anyone working in the MRI field, I used this book like a dictionary, looking up concepts that were not very clear to me.
MRI from A to Z is essentially a glossary of terms organized alphabetically. The definitions are not always comprehensive, but when faced with an unfamiliar term in every day practice, I could quickly look it up. Even if the explanation was not extensive, it was a good start for pursuing additional research.
Some entries are illustrated and the quality is generally very good. Another useful feature is the cross-referencing of many entries, which allows for a better understanding of key concepts. The short appendix contains relevant magnetic resonance-related constants, equations, and suggestions for further reading.
Unfortunately, MRI from A to Z does not offer information on the clinical relevance of the material. For instance, detailed explanations of various pulse sequences, along with a discussion of their clinical utilization, would have been valuable. Also, the book would have benefited with more on minimizing MRI artifacts.
MRI from A to Z will prove useful from everyone from MRI technicians to radiology residents to physicians.
