Diagnostic Imaging: Obstetrics by Paula Woodward, Anne Kennedy, Roya Sohaey, Janice L. B. Byrne, Karen Y. Oh, and Michael Puchalski
Elsevier Science, St. Louis, 2006, $259
The layout, organization, and graphics of Diagnostic Imaging: Obstetrics follows the familiar, user-friendly format of the popular Amirsys series. This single volume is written in outline form and is just over 800 pages, but is equivalent to a traditional text twice its size in terms of how comprehensive the material is. The information ranges from practical, everyday issues encountered in most routine obstetric exams to the highly esoteric anomalies seen at tertiary referral centers.
The topics are presented in a "lecture" format that showcases key clinical and imaging points. A handy list of abbreviations is at the beginning of each section. A highlighted summary box recapitulates the essentials of every chapter, which is helpful as a quick reference or even for a last review before the boards.
The ultrasound images are superb and are accompanied by interesting MRI studies as well as gross pathology photos for correlation. The scope of the text is exceptional and far exceeds that previously available in this field.
This easily manageable single volume sets a new standard for obstetrical imaging. Every radiology and obstetrical practice performing these exams will find that Diagnostic Imaging: Obstetrics is an invaluable reference.
