International Travel Health Guide 2006-2007

International Travel Health Guide 2006-2007 by Stuart R. Rose and Jay S. Keystone, 13th ed.
Elsevier Health, St. Louis, 2006, $25.95

The International Travel Guide has the distinction of being the only U.S.-based travel health book that is published yearly. As a result, the information is up-to-date and the writing is very polished.

The Guide has sections on trip preparation, food and drink safety, travel-related diseases (malaria, travelers' diarrhea), and medical care abroad, as well as a world medical guide that lists regional disease risk summaries. This is a quick reference section that provides general information, as well as current advisories and health risks, for more than 200 countries.

The authors use a minimal amount of medical jargon making this reference useful for the lay traveler and medical professionals who manage patients that travel internationally. There's also a section reserved for hand-written notes.

This paperback is reasonably small for a reference text and could be packed in a suitcase. However, it is slightly too large and heavy for carrying on expeditions where maintaining a minimum amount of weight is critical.

The International Travel Guide 2006-2007 is an essential reference for those who want to maximize their chances of staying healthy abroad or those who like to have an emergency plan in place. It offers a viable alternative for larger reference texts on wilderness survival or tropical medicine.
