It's the most wonderful time of the year -- at least if you're a medical student. The National Resident Matching Program said that results will be available on Friday, March 15, for Match Day, when students discover the academic program to which they've been assigned.
More than 17,000 allopathic medical school seniors and 16,000 other applicants will learn on Match Day where they will live and train for the next three to seven years. NRMP reports a success rate of more than 95% in matching U.S. seniors with programs.
"It's a wonderful and exciting day," said Mona Signer, executive director of NRMP.
The residency application process typically begins in the senior year for U.S. medical students. After applying to programs, academic institutions review applications and invite selected candidates for interviews in the fall and early winter.
After the interview period, both parties create "rank-order lists": Programs rank applicants in order of preference, and applicants compile their lists based on their preferred medical specialty and the location of the training programs.
NRMP's matching algorithm then pairs those preferences to fill the available training positions at U.S. teaching hospitals.
Match Day results will be available starting at 1 p.m. Eastern on March 15 on NRMP's website.
